ABOUT THE EXPO

EXPO-2014-logo-final-2
As one of the few people who has attended every Gentlemen’s Club Owners EXPO, I have had the rare privilege of seeing the event grow and, even more importantly, seeing the event become one of the most critical factors in protecting and shaping the future of the adult nightclub industry.

    How it all started!

The 1st Annual Gentlemen’s Club Owners EXPO

stardust-021993, The Stardust Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas

For the first three years of its existence, starting in 1991, ED Publications was simply the Annual Adult Nightclubs Guide (then dubbed the EXOTIC DANCER Directory).  There were no bimonthly Club Bulletins and no Gentlemen’s Club Owners Expos until ...

In 1993, Michael J. Peter of the Pure Platinum, Solid Gold and Dollhouse chain teamed with pay-per-view video producer Ed Rasen to do a huge Topless Dancer World Championship contest at the Stardust Casino in Las Vegas.  Since there were going to be entertainers and some club owners at the showgirl competition, I talked to Peter and Rasen about doing a small convention at the same time, and the Annual Gentlemen’s Club Owners EXPO was launched November 19-21, 1993.
The entire show—panels and exhibit booths—all fit into one room at the Stardust.  We had about 300 attendees and 27 exhibitors.  There were no feature showcases, no off-property parties and no ED’s Awards Show, but the panels and tradeshow were well attended and that first EXPO set our course for the next 20 years of providing club owners with their very own convention to hear professional speakers address topics specific to our industry, to rub shoulders with other adult nightclub owners, and to see the latest products and services for the industry.
That year the entire ED staff was myself and Jim Hayek, who at that time worked with me on a concert industry magazine that I was also publishing.  I couldn’t have done the show without Jim, and I like to think that the true pay-off for his help was that at that EXPO he met feature entertainer Lauren Foxx who later became Mrs. Ann Marie Hayek, and together they established the successful Pure Talent Agency.  Also chipping in from a concert industry magazine that I was also publishing at the time was Terry Lowe who helped organize the panel sessions.
stardust-01The first-ever EXPO panel session was “Promoting Your Club” with Michael J. Peter, Dawn Rizos of The Lodge (then of Caligula in Dallas), Ed Rasen of Showcase Media, Phil Johnson of Bailey’s 20/20 in Los Angeles, and Ralph Alden of Babe’s in Scottsdale.  Next up was “Staying Open In A Hostile City” with attorneys John Weston and Luke Lirot, and James Greer of National Beverage Law Services.
The next day’s panels started with “Booking (and Keeping) Top Quality Dancers” with Frank Bane of the Continental Theatrical Agency, Tony Indovina of The Lee Network and feature entertainer Sandra Scream.  That afternoon was the “Combatting Entertainer Tax Laws” panel with attorneys Steve Solomon and Dick Wilson, and wage expert Harry Weisbrod.
Other industry heavyweights on hand at the first EXPO were Dave Baucom of MAL Entertainment; Randy Beasley, Duke Dearing and Jeff Stoller, then with Michael J. Peter Management; Lowell Smith of Wide World Entertainment; Ken Kimmel with Cheri magazine; agent Paul Borghese; and DJ Patrick Bishop.
Some of our first exhibitors who are still taking booths at the EXPO today included The Lee Network, Continental Agency, Class Act Uniforms, Tooters Promotions, Chemical Light, Core Systems, Easybar and Bulbman.  Feature entertainers on hand included Venus DeLight, Vanna Lace, Sandra Scream, the Raye Sisters, Lori Wagner and Serenity (who won the Topless Dancer Championship).
The EXPO, after 1993, was off and running!
